Dr. Truog discusses the evolution of criteria for deciding when it is acceptable to take organs from people for transplant. He contrasts the standard approach of “brain death,” where the heart is still beating, to an approach where brain death has not occurred, and organs are removed after the heart stops on its own and is then restarted to preserve the organs.
