How to Apply

Contact Us

Application Deadline: November 1, 2022

Thank you for your interest in our residency program. We begin interviews at the end of October. Completed applications must be received by November 1, 2022, to be considered for the 2023 Match.

  • Completed applications must be received by November 1 of the year prior to the match date.
  • All applicants must register with the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP) for an R1 position.
  • All applications to our residency program must come through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). A complete application consists of the ERAS Common Application form, medical school transcript, personal statement, USMLE report (Step 1) or COMLEX level 1 report, MSPE and letters of recommendation. For the 2022-23 application season, we recognize many clinical experiences have been delayed for applicants. We will consider your application complete and ready for review and invitation with receipt of one letter of recommendation prior to November 1. We ask for a total of three letters of recommendation to be submitted by January 1, 2022. A letter of recommendation from your Chair is not required. We do not have any requirements as to the authors of the letters of recommendation other than that they are faculty you have worked with during your medical school time and advise at least two letters of recommendation are from clinical time.
  • USMLE Step 1 or COMLEX level 1 must be passed prior to applying and we advise that Step 2CK/COMLEX level 2 be passed before the match. We do not accept applications from applicants who have not successfully passed Step 1 or COMLEX level 1 and we do not have a minimum Step 1 or COMLEX level 1 score for application consideration.
  • Our program is participating in the ERAS supplemental application for the 2022-2023 season with adherence to the AAMC code of conduct. Completion of the standard MyERAS application is a requirement; completion of the supplemental ERAS application is optional. There is no cost to applicants and participation is optional.

The supplemental ERAS application includes:

  • geographic preferences (by division and by urban or rural setting);
  • information about an applicant's most meaningful experiences and other impactful life events, if applicable; and
  • program signals.

We plan to use information about an applicant’s most meaningful work, volunteer or research experiences as part of their holistic ERAS file review for interview invitation. Geographic preferencing and program signaling may be reviewed as part of our process for applicants that may be waitlisted for an interview. We will not use geographic preferencing or signaling to prepare for interviews and interviewers and selection committee members will not have access to preferencing or signaling. We will not disclose the identification of applicants that have signaled. Please know that we have always sent out interview invitations in waves, often by track, and the timing of interview invitations does not reflect our interest in an applicant.

If you choose to program signal the UW/SCH and wish to apply to more than one track (e.g., Categorical and Alaska or one of the combination tracks) you do not need to signal each track separately. We will assume that any signal to a track extends to any other tracks to which you apply.

Learn more about the AAMC supplemental ERAS application.

We accept applications from the following types of medical schools:

  • Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME)–accredited medical schools in the U.S. or Canada
  • American Osteopathic Association (AOA)–accredited colleges in the U.S.
  • International medical schools (see here for requirements)

All applicants must have graduated from medical school no more than two years prior to the residency start date unless they have been participating in another ACGME-accredited residency or fellowship program or other post-graduate education since graduation are currently practicing medicine in another specialty. MD/PhD applicants who have been engaged in research activities for greater than two years since graduation may still be eligible to apply for the Research or Pediatric Genetics tracks or Pediatric Neurology and are encouraged to contact program leadership for eligibility. Other applicants are encouraged to contact the program on an individual basis if there are questions about eligibility.

First-year positions at UW/SCH are selected through the National Residency Matching Program (NRMP). Each track within the Pediatric Residency Program has separate NRMP program codes. Applicants are encouraged to apply to as many tracks as interest them:

1918320C0 Pediatrics (categorical) (3 years)
1918320C1 Pediatrics/Alaska (3 years)
1918320C2 Pediatrics/Research (3 years)
1918320C3 Pediatrics/Health Equity (3 years)
1918185C0 Pediatric Neurology (5 years)
1918765C0 Pediatrics-Medical Genetics (5 years)

If an applicant is applying for the UW pediatric-neurology residency match, he/she/they must apply through The University of Washington Pediatric Neurology Residency Program. Applicants do not need to apply separately to the University of Washington pediatrics program unless they also would like to be considered for the pediatrics program.

Selection

In addition to the UW policy above, the UW Pediatric Residency Program uses the following criteria when making their rank list:

  •  We have a holistic admissions process that emphasizes applicant experiences, background, leadership potential and lifelong learning. Our program looks for applicants that value adaptability, collaboration, communication, diversity, equity, excellence, humility, innovation, integrity and teamwork.
  • Our program does not discriminate applicants on the basis of race, culture, ethnicity, nationality, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, spirituality, age, veteran status, socioeconomic status and mental and physical status.
  • Only applicants who have applied through NRMP will be considered for R1 positions in any of our programs.

Alaska Track

There is a separate match number to apply to the Alaska Primary Care Track. To be considered for both the straight categorical program and the Alaska Primary Care Track, you must apply to each separately using their individual match numbers.

Please note that the interview process for the Alaska Track will involve two separate interview dates; one for categorical program and one for Alaska track. We recommend you schedule these interviews close together but do not require that you schedule this way.

Health Equity Track

There is a separate match number to apply to the Health Equity Track. To be considered for both the categorical program and the Health Equity track, you must apply to each separately using their individual match numbers.

Please note that the interview process for the Health Equity Track will blend our standard categorical residency interview day with additional sessions specific to the Health Equity Track.

Research Track

There is a separate match number to apply to the Research Track. To be considered for both the categorical program and the Research Track, you must apply to each separately using their individual match numbers.

Please note that the interview process for the Research Track will involve two separate interview dates; one with our categorical program and one for Research Meetings and track overview. We recommend you schedule these dates close together but do not require that you schedule this way. Please explore the exciting research taking place at Seattle Children’s and the University of Washington.

Interview Dates

Please visit the UW Pediatric Residency Program events calendar.

Interview Details

Each applicant will have two faculty interviews and one resident interview. Our faculty interviewers have had implicit bias training. Interviewers do not have access to your board reports, grades or MSPE. Interviews will be conducted via Zoom.

Spend Some Extra Time Virtually in Seattle

If you have interest in visiting Harborview Medical Center, a continuity clinic site or the University of Washington, or have additional questions about living in Seattle, please check out the UW GME website or reach out to us with questions.

Typically, our residents host social events in their homes to allow applicants to get to know our residents in an informal setting. While our interview season will be remote this year, we also recognize the importance of these social events for getting a feel for the community and culture of our residency program. We will be hosting a variety of virtual social events throughout the interview season and details will be sent once your interview date is scheduled.

Diversity Socials

These informal events are designed to give applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in medicine a chance to get to know some residents and faculty from our Resident Diversity Committee. While at our socials you can ask any questions you might have, and we can give you a little taste of what Seattle has to offer. The diversity socials this recruitment season will be virtual and dates will be coming soon. If you are interested in obtaining more information or attending a Zoom event, please contact us.
