"I feel exceptionally fortunate to work with some of the smartest people I know. Each day brings new opportunities to learn from my colleagues, patients and families. By the nature of our work in Hematology/Oncology, we see the importance of what we do every day. I am continually impressed by our ability to change the lives of children and young adults for the better, both with good clinical care and by clinical and translational research efforts. My hope is that the clinical research done by the Children's Oncology Group and at Seattle Children's Hospital today will lead to more effective treatments with fewer side effects for children and young adults in the future."

Dr. Hawkins is Group Chair of the Children's Oncology Group (COG). Prior to becoming COG Group Chair in 2020, he was the Chair of the COG Soft Tissue Sarcoma Committee, overseeing the conduct of biology studies and clinical trials for rhabdomyosarcoma and other soft tissue sarcomas across North America. Dr. Hawkins was a member of the COG Bone Tumor Steering Committee. His academic career has focused on clinical research, particularly in the treatment of pediatric sarcomas. He was the chair of two COG clinical trials, one for Ewing sarcoma and another for rhabdomyosarcoma. Research Description
The goals of the Children's Oncology Group are to: 1) design and conduct collaborative clinical-translational studies for children with cancer that build on an increasing understanding of the molecular basis for pediatric malignancies, bridge gaps in knowledge, and have the highest potential to improve outcome for all childhood cancer patients; 2) conduct research that lessens the morbidity of cancer therapy and improves the quality of life for children throughout their care, spanning diagnosis, treatment and survivorship; 3) collect and highly annotate biospecimens from all children with cancer, leveraging COG’s nearly population based research enterprise, to provide the foundation for discovery of the molecular basis of all childhood cancers, no matter how rare, and accelerate the most promising translational research efforts conducted at laboratories around the world
