  • Biography

    Shilpi Chabra, MD, is Associate Professor of Pediatrics in the Division of Neonatology, Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine. She is the medical director of the NICU at Overlake Hospital.

    She is passionate about teaching and mentoring fellows during their training and journey in the neonatal intensive care unit, and also helps medical students and pediatric residents through bedside teaching. Her scholarly interests include bronchopulmonary dysplasia, Vitamin A status, epidemiology and management of gastroschisis, congenital diaphragmatic hernia and other birth defects.
    As the medical director of the NICU at Overlake, she is involved in empowering parents to be a partner of the medical team with a goal to provide family-centered care for our young patients. She helped start the nutrition clinic for premature infants at Overlake Hospital with a focus on post-discharge growth and is involved in several quality improvement projects. She is a member of the Seattle Children's Hospital Clinical Effectiveness Program for Gastroschisis guideline development and is involved in developing protocols for prenatal and postnatal management of the fetus with gastroschisis.
    Nationally, she successfully petitioned for establishment of separate ICD-9 codes for gastroschisis and omphalocele to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
